Senior Energy Engineer

Position Overview

USL Technology Consulting Inc. (USLT) is seeking a Senior Energy Engineer with 7+ years of experience in energy engineering, building performance, energy audits, commissioning, sustainability consulting, or related technical work.

The Senior Energy Engineer will lead technical delivery for NYC Local Law 87 audits, ASHRAE Level II energy audits, energy conservation measure analysis, retro-commissioning, whole-building energy modeling, Local Law 97 emissions analysis, LEED energy documentation, and life cycle assessment. This role will serve as a technical lead for client projects, manage technical deliverables, review work prepared by junior staff, and coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams.

Key Responsibilities

Energy Modeling and Building Performance

  • Lead whole-building energy modeling using DesignBuilder and EnergyPlus.

  • Develop ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G baseline and proposed design energy models.

  • Perform parametric modeling, sensitivity analysis, HVAC system comparisons, envelope analysis, electrification studies, and peak-demand assessments.

  • Review model assumptions, schedules, internal loads, HVAC inputs, calibration methods, and simulation outputs.

  • Develop technical recommendations for energy efficiency, electrification, carbon reduction, and building-system optimization.

NYC Local Law 87 and ASHRAE Level II Audits

  • Lead ASHRAE Level II energy audits, including site visits, field verification, equipment inventories, utility-data analysis, building-operations interviews, and system assessments.

  • Develop and evaluate Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), Resource Conservation Measures (RCMs), and Operations and Maintenance Measures (OM&M).

  • Perform and review energy-savings calculations, interactive-effects analysis, utility-cost savings, and system-level impacts.

  • Prepare RSMeans-based implementation-cost estimates, maintenance-cost estimates, lifecycle-cost analysis, simple payback, Savings-to-Investment Ratio (SIR), and Net Present Value (NPV) calculations.

  • Prepare and review Local Law 87 audit reports, compliance forms, technical narratives, findings tables, and supporting documentation.

  • Lead retro-commissioning investigations, functional testing, deficiency tracking, corrective-action recommendations, and final RCx documentation.

NYC Local Law 97, Energy Code, and LEED Support

  • Lead Local Law 97 emissions modeling, carbon-compliance forecasting, and decarbonization pathway analysis.

  • Review building envelope, HVAC, lighting, and controls systems for NYCECC and NYStretch compliance.

  • Provide technical leadership for LEED Energy and Atmosphere documentation, including EAp2, EAc1, EAc2, EAc5, and EAc6.

  • Coordinate with architects, MEP engineers, contractors, and owners to identify energy-efficiency and carbon-reduction opportunities.

Life Cycle Assessment and Embodied Carbon

  • Lead whole-building life cycle assessment modeling using One Click LCA.

  • Coordinate with architecture, structural, and BIM teams to obtain material quantities, product data, and Environmental Product Declarations.

  • Support LEED MRc1 documentation and embodied-carbon reduction strategies.

  • Review LCA results and provide recommendations for material optimization and carbon reduction.

Design Coordination, Field Support, and QA/QC

  • Review drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, submittals, and technical reports for energy-related impacts.

  • Conduct site visits to verify installed conditions, equipment performance, control sequences, and operational issues.

  • Support measurement and verification planning, BAS trend review, and building-performance analysis.

  • Serve as a technical resource during design coordination meetings and client meetings.

  • Review calculations, reports, and documentation prepared by junior engineers and consultants.

  • Maintain technical QA/QC standards, project documentation procedures, and deliverable schedules.

  • Mentor junior staff and provide technical guidance on energy modeling, audit procedures, calculations, and reporting.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Building Science, Architectural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience in energy engineering, building performance, energy audits, commissioning, retro-commissioning, or sustainability consulting.

  • Extensive experience with NYC Local Law 87 and ASHRAE Level II energy audits.

  • Strong experience with ECM analysis, energy-savings calculations, interactive effects, RSMeans cost estimating, lifecycle-cost analysis, SIR, NPV, and payback calculations.

  • Advanced proficiency with DesignBuilder and EnergyPlus.

  • Experience using One Click LCA for whole-building life cycle assessment.

  • Strong knowledge of ASHRAE 90.1, NYCECC, NYStretch, NYC Local Law 87, NYC Local Law 97, and LEED v4/v4.1.

  • Ability to interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural drawings and specifications.

  • Strong technical writing, project coordination, quality-control, and client communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • LEED AP BD+C credential.

  • Certified Energy Manager, Building Energy Assessment Professional, Commissioning Professional, or similar credential.

  • Experience with Revit, BIM workflows, quantity takeoffs, BAS systems, and measurement and verification protocols.

  • Experience supervising junior engineers, consultants, or technical project workstreams.
